Precision Fenestration: Climate-Responsive Skylight Optimization

In the intense solar environment of Houston, Texas, the strategic placement of skylights is a critical balance between harvesting natural light and mitigating excessive heat gain. Our consultancy for this private residence focused on an Evidence-Based Fenestration Strategy, where every aperture was validated through rigorous climate data analysis. By simulating Houston’s specific solar path and annual radiation levels, we conducted a thermal-visual performance study to determine the optimal coordinates, sizing, and orientation for the skylight system. This ensured that the interior receives high-quality zenithal light while minimizing the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) to maintain energy efficiency.

Beyond simple placement, we provided technical specifications for the glazing properties and shading geometries required to prevent localized glare and "hot spots" within the living spaces. By analyzing the building’s footprint in relation to seasonal solar angles, we ensured a uniform distribution of daylight that enhances the architectural volume without compromising the HVAC system’s performance. This project exemplifies our Micro-Climate Consulting approach, proving that even small-scale architectural interventions, when backed by precise environmental data, can significantly elevate the occupant's visual comfort and the building’s overall sustainability.
